3 common early-voting questions from Arizona voters

KJZZ is partnering with America Amplified to answer questions about how to participate in the 2022 midterm elections.

Here are some of the top questions about early voting in Arizona we've answered so far.

If I signed up for early voting by mail, received a ballot for the primary election, but did not participate (return the ballot) will my general election ballot come automatically?

Yes, you will still receive a ballot for the midterm election. According to the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office, it takes two full election cycles — four years — for your name to be removed from the mail in ballot list. So you should receive your ballot for the midterms.

My wife and I will be out of the country from Sept. 28 till Nov. 21. We have always had early ballots mailed to us and we mail them back. How do we participate this time? It is extremely important that we do.

It sounds like you often vote by mail. If that's your preferred way of voting, you can sign up for the Active Early Voting List and have ballots automatically mailed to you for each election you're eligible to vote in. Otherwise, you can sign up for a one-time ballot request and vote by mail that way as well. Find out more about the two programs and sign up at the Arizona Secretary of State's Office website.

I have plans to leave the U.S. around mid October for two months. Will I receive my ballot by mail in October? What is the earliest date I can receive my mail-in ballot?

You can check with Arizona Clean Elections to see if you are still on the Active Early Voting List. Mail-in ballots are sent out no earlier than 27 days before Election Day. This year, that day is Oct. 12. Your mail-in ballot should arrive shortly after that date. You can also vote early in person starting Oct. 12, but locations for doing that have not yet been released. You can find more information about early voting at azcleanelections.gov.
