One of the nation’s largest community college systems has a new permanent chancellor.
The board of the Maricopa County Community College District voted to appoint Steven Gonzales to the post on Tuesday night. He has served as the district’s interim chancellor since January 2020.
Under Gonzales’ leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, the system’s 10 colleges which serve more than 220,000 students, have transitioned most of its classes to remote learning.
Gonzales has more than 20 years of instructional and administrative experience in higher education. From 2011 to 2013, he served as the acting associate vice president of academic affairs and chief academic officer for the Pinal County Community College District, which operates as Central Arizona College.
