A federal judge blocked Arizona from enforcing a law that could inadvertently make felons out of volunteers who help people register to vote.
The law would have made it a felony to knowingly provide a voting mechanism to a person registered in another state.
U.S. District Court Judge Murray Snow said the provision approved earlier this year was not written clearly enough for people to know what was legal or what is meant by mechanism.
He blocked another part of the same law detailing when county election officials are required to cancel a voter’s registration. He did so because it did not comply with the rules allowed by the National Voter Registration Act on what constitutes a state’s right to cancel someone’s registration.
Attorney General Mark Brnovich will have the chance to argue for the two provisions. In the meantime, no one will be arrested for violating the law until there is a final ruling.
