Tempe wants new name ideas for places named after KKK members

Hudson Lane and Redden Park are examples of a Tempe street and a public space that carry the namesakes of former Ku Klux Klan members. City officials are asking the public to suggest new names.

The Parks and Streets Renaming Ad Hoc Committee met on Friday in an effort to begin renaming several parks and streets in Tempe. This follows a June announcement in which three schools in the Tempe Elementary School District changed their names after the discovery that they also were named after former members of the KKK.

The meeting was the first of four that will take place over the coming weeks. The public will also have an opportunity to participate in the renaming process by going to the official Tempe forum website.

The deadline for suggestions is Oct. 17.
