The Mexican government is working on a plan to establish a state-owned airline that would be operated by the military.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador confirmed the plans for an army-operated Mexican airline Tuesday, after the proposal became public through leaked documents obtained by hackers known as Guacamaya.
"But we still haven't decided," he said during a press conference Tuesday.
AMLO, as the president is known, said his government is still analyzing the economic viability of the airline, but that it could be operational by next year.
The airline would have a fleet of at least 10 planes, including the former presidential jet, which AMLO has tried unsuccessfully to sell. Purchased under his predecessors, he says it is too luxurious, instead opting to take commercial flights.
The army-run airline would provide air service for the president’s controversial Maya Train tourism project, which is also being constructed by the army, as this administration continues to expand the military’s role.
