Former President Donald Trump will be in Mesa on Sunday, trying to rally support for a slate of Republican candidates he’s endorsed in the state.
Early voting begins next week, and remains hugely popular in Arizona. And as political consultant Mike O’Neil points out, these rallies would typically be used to remind voters to get their ballots mailed back on time.
"But Trump can’t say that, ’cause he’s staked out this position to be against mail-in ballots, and I think that’s gonna haunt the Republican Party for decades," O'Neil said.
Republican leaders and candidates in Arizona have also taken positions against mail-in balloting, and O’Neil says that’s resonating with the GOP base. He expects a stark difference between mail-in results and the results of in-person voting on Election Day.
