Those who take a standardized test, often used to enhance college applications, have hit the lowest average score in decades. Arizona’s ACT scores fall below the national average.
Out of 36 points, the national average score fell to 19.8. This is the first time in just over two decades that the average score dropped below 20. It’s also the lowest average in more than 30 years. In comparison, this year’s graduates in Arizona scored an average of 18.4.
Experts say while the decline is not new, it’s alarming. The scores reflect student preparedness for college-level coursework.
Standardized tests have faced concerns that they're unfair to minority and low-income students, due to the lack of access and the expense of prep courses and materials. But some universities no longer require the tests.
