Interior Department to change Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act helps protect tribal burial sites and sacred objects.

The federal government recently announced that it plans to update the legislation.

For years, tribal graves and cultural sites were dug up by archaeologists and looters, and human remains and sacred objects wound up in museum warehouses or on the black market.

In 1990, Congress passed legislation to help tribes reclaim these items.

The Interior Department recently announced proposed revisions to the act, which are now available for public comment.

The department says the changes will streamline the process that museums and federal agencies use to analyze items in their collections.
