Hermosillo holds first ever balloon festival; officials hope to make it annual event

Over the weekend, thousands attended the first balloon festival in the Sonoran capital Hermosillo.

The event, which officials hope to make an annual tradition, was held on the western edge of the city at the Estadio Sonora.

High winds  reportedly complicated the show somewhat, but the balloons were eventually able to get off the ground. The weekend closed out with a concert by Alex Syntek.

“We expected a lot of people, but not this many,” said Hermosillo Mayor Antonio Astiazaran, which he took as evidence of widespread interest in such events.

“This festival is here to stay,” he added.
