UA president: Campus police tried to get suspect in professor shooting charged earlier in year

It’s been two weeks since University of Arizona professor  Tom Meixner was fatally shot on campus by a former student. In a statement issued Monday, the university’s president says campus police tried to get the suspect charged in two separate threat cases earlier this year.

The Pima County Attorney’s Office confirms that the UA Police Department did send information their way in an attempt to prosecute Murad Dervish, but the county attorney said there was not sufficient evidence to charge him with Threats and Intimidation.

In the statement, University President Robert Robbins said campus officials took actions as far back as January, when they prohibited Dervish from its property. Other attempts included changing room entry passwords, and eventual expulsion and total ban from campus and school activities.

Robbins said on top of the UA and Tucson police investigations, independent security agencies will review campus safety protocol and send him a report before the end of the year.

Robbins added if the school could have acted better, they would enact changes.
