'The Falling and the Rising' opera tells the story of a soldier wounded by a roadside bomb

Stories about the challenges faced by American servicemembers have been told in many media — from movies to TV shows to visual art, just to name a few. And Arizona Opera is now a part of that, as well, with its production of "The Falling and the Rising."

It tells the story of a female soldier who’s wounded by a roadside bomb and goes into a coma. What follows is a dreamscape, in which she sees visions of other soldiers’ stories.

The show is based on interviews with wounded soldiers at Maryland's Walter Reed Hospital and is the brainchild of Sgt. 1st Class Ben Hilgert. He’s a member of the U.S. Army Field Band and was a freelance opera singer for around a decade before that. The Show spoke with Hilgert and asked what was the impetus to put this performance together.

Arizona Opera will be performing the show Oct. 22-23 at Tucson's Temple of Music and Art.
