After series of shootouts, Sonoran authorities increase security around Guaymas

Police in one Sonoran coastal city are increasing their watch outside schools following a recent series of intense neighborhood shootouts, including one outside a prisonin the area.

Several neighborhoods of northern Guaymas will see those stepped up police patrols, according to state security chief Maria Dolores del Rio. That will be especially notable around the times that parents are picking up and dropping off kids at school, in response to requests from local residents worried about their children’s safety in the wake of recent insecurity.

The announcement came shortly before reports of another shootout in neighboring Empalme, in which the two passengers of a vehicle were injured and another killed.

The incident took place near a kindergarten, and one of those shot in the attack attempted to take refuge in the school before being taken to a hospital for medical attention, according to del Rio.
