Transfer of Mexican National Guard to military control halted for now by judge

The transfer of Mexico’s National Guard to military control is on hold — for now.

In early September, Mexico’s legislature approved a measure transferring the nominally civilian National Guard to the country’s Defense Ministry, a controversial move that has been criticized as part of a broader trend of militarization.

Now, that move is on hold for the time being after a recent court ruling in favor of plaintiffs opposed to the reform.

Judge Karla Maria Macias ordered that work to transfer Guard resources to the military be immediately halted, and that the police force remain under the control of the security ministry. The outlet El Financiero reportsthat the ruling can still be challenged by the federal government.
