Mexico will share a plan to develop new sustainable energy solutions in neighboring Sonora at the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference this month. Leaders see that as a major opportunity for the state.
Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo announced this week that the state’s sustainable energy plan will be a centerpiece of Mexico’s presentation to the COP27 conference in Egypt, which starts on Sunday.
Durazo and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador tout the state plan as an ambitious clean energy hub on the U.S.-Mexico border, which will include solarand wind plants, lithium mining and electric vehicle factories.
They presented the idea to U.S. climate envoy John Kerry during his weekend visit to the state and hope the U.S. will help with funding. Durazo sees Sonora’s central role in Mexico’s climate actions as a boon for the state’s image and economy.
