Violence in — and around — schools is a major concern for many parents and educators. In neighboring Sonora, officials say they are working on a new plan to address those issues.
Sonoran education and public safety officials announced they are rolling out a violence prevention program in Sonora’s schools.
The strategy will tackle structural issues that lead to violence and help students to recognize and address risk factors both in and out of the classroom.
The announcement comes after a fight between middle school girls in southern Sonora made headlines due to rumors about the resulting injuries. Officials say those involved have recovered and are back at school.
Teachers and parents have also been demanding action to address violence outside of the classroom, including recent shootouts in Guaymas and Empalme that had terrifying impacts on students. Many say schools are underprepared to address such threats.
