Tech giant Google has agreed to a nearly $400 million settlement with 40 states to resolve an investigation into how the company tracked users’ locations.
Arizona was the first state to file action against Google in early 2020, which settled last month for $85 million.
A Google spokesperson said the lawsuits were based on outdated policies that were changed years ago. The company continued to track people’s locations even after they opted out by disabling Location History.
Location data can be stored to help companies sell digital ads to marketers.
The tracking problem affected both Android phones as their operating systems are developed by Google, and iPhones that used services such as Google Maps.
