Gov.-elect Katie Hobbs declared victory in a speech this morning, one day after the Associated Press called the race for governor in her favor.
Hobbs beat Kari Lake, a Trump-endorsed, election-denying Republican who many polls projected would be the winner ahead of last week’s election. But Hobbs never trailed in the race she currently leads by roughly 18,000 votes.
“In this election Arizonans chose solving our problems over conspiracy theories. We chose sanity over chaos. And we chose unity over division. We chose a better Arizona, and we chose democracy,” Hobbs said in a speech for her supporters in Phoenix.
In her victory speech, Hobbs vowed to work with Republicans and Democrats alike to better fund Arizona’s public schools and provide more resources to the state’s border communities.
She also promised to try and repeal Arizona’s pre-statehood ban on abortions.
“As soon as my term begins, I will do everything in my power to repeal the draconian 1864 abortion ban that puts so many women's lives at risk,” Hobbs said.
Hobbs is one of a record 12 women elected as governor across the country in this midterm election. She’s also the fifth woman elected governor in Arizona.
