Mexico’s president says he has a ‘Plan B’ to ensure reforms to elections system

Mexico’s president is moving forward undeterred with a controversial proposal to reform the country’s election system, and says there could be more than one way to achieve those changes.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador says reforms of Mexico's elections system are so important, he already has a “Plan B” ready in case the current proposal fails.

He says a constitutional reform is ideal. But if it can’t muster the needed votes, he would propose another law that wouldn’t require changes to the constitution.

Many worry the proposed reforms could threaten the National Electoral Institute’s independence. But López Obrador has been dismissive of such arguments, claiming massive protests over the weekend were stunts by political rivals.

On Wednesday, a State Department spokesman responded to news of the protests saying that independent, nonpartisan electoral institutions are a “cornerstone of democracy.”
