Indian Garden has long been a major rest stop for hikers on the Grand Canyon’s Bright Angel Trail. But the landmark is getting a name change.
The area was once home to the Havasupai.
The last tribal member to live there was forcibly removed from the inner canyon in 1928.
The tribe, which now lives in a village west of the park, recently suggested changing the name from Indian Garden to Havasupai Gardens, and park officials agreed.
Workers have already begun to change the name on signs, the website and other materials.
A ceremony to rededicate the site will take place in the spring of 2023.
