With just two months of data left to report, Sonora remains on track to not set a new murder record this year.
It’s been a grim annual ritual for a number of years. In January, crime data for the previous year is released, and Sonorans learn by how much the previous year’s murder record was beaten. But unless things change dramatically, Sonora is set to not put up a new record this year.
Through October, there had been 1,423 murder victims, a staggering toll, but nearly 200 fewer — and 11% lower — than the same period in 2021, according to the most current federal data.
Cajeme, a longstanding violence hot spot, is showing a double-digit percentage drop, and the capital Hermosillo is showing an even larger 30% fall.
Caborca, which in recent years has quickly risen to be one of the state’s most violent cities, is on track to set a record this year.
