The Pleasant Valley area is known as the site of a long-running feud between two Arizona ranching families, but it’s also the site of an abandoned asbestos mill.
Tonto National Forest will begin cleanup operations for the abandoned mill, which is located south of Young.
The agency says the site has an old building with about 38 tons of material assumed to contain asbestos.
It also has two large waste piles, elevated levels of arsenic and asbestos tailings.
Workers will build a repository for some of the material and move some of it to a waste management facility. Roads in the area will remain open during the cleanup, which should be completed in January.
