The Arizona attorney general’s race will go down as one of the closest in state history. And there’s another twist as new legal filings are now contesting the outcome.
Republican candidate Abe Hamadeh has asked a Maricopa County Superior Court judge to halt the secretary of state from declaring Democrat Kris Mayes the winner. The two candidates in the final tally were separated by just 510 votes. The slim victory will already trigger a recount by state law.
Hamadeh claims there were a series of mistakes and illegal actions in the general election referring to problems at Maricopa County polling places. The lawsuit casts a wide net of claims against several elections officials including the recorders and supervisors in Arizona’s other 14 counties.
No date has been set for a hearing.
