The largest university in Mexico and Latin America has entered into an agreement with a major publisher of open-access science and medical journals.
Open-access journals like those published by the Public Library of Science, or PLOS, grew in response to exorbitant journal publishing fees and from a desire to make research accessible to the public who often funds it.
But such journals still charge hundreds to thousands of dollars per paper — too expensive for many research budgets — and PLOS journals are among the priciest.
The agreement between PLOS and the venerable Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico, or UNAM), will establish a flat fee that will shift publishing costs from researchers to the university, streamline management and overhead, and expand readership for UNAM’s research.
Founded in 1551 as the name of the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico, UNAM is among the highest ranked universities in Latin America.
