An annual report released by the Arizona Child Fatality Review Program showed an increase in the number of child deaths in the state.
Last year, 863 children died in comparison to the 838 deaths the year prior. Firearm injuries made up one of the leading causes of those deaths according to the report.
David Lujan is the CEO and president of the Children’s Action Alliance.
"Gun violence is an issue nationwide that we’ve been dealing with for too long and unfortunately just seems to be getting worse. And so what do we do to, you know, prevent access to guns in Arizona so that we keep children safe?" he asked.
Of the 863 deaths, nearly half were determined to be preventable. Other reasons for the deaths include vehicle crashes, drowning and neglect.
