The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on the Respect for Marriage Act on Nov. 29, which codifies into law protections for same-sex marriage along with religious liberties.
Senators voted Nov. 28 to end debate on the bill, with both Democrats and some Republicans in favor. Among other supporters is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which lauded the measure’s rights for the LGBTQ community while also protecting religious freedom.
The church’s support came as a surprise to many, including Steve May. May, who is gay, grew up in the LDS church and helped lead the first effort to defeat a ban on same-sex marriage in Arizona.
The Show spoke with him and asked him what he thought when he saw the LDS church's support for this bill.
