The Salton Sea was created in 1905 when the Colorado River jumped a California irrigation canal during a wet spring.
The drought has led to falling water levels in the lake, which has a higher concentration of salts than the ocean.
But it provides habitat for birds and fish, so the decline can affect wildlife.
The dry lakebed also increases dust emissions in the region.
The Department of Interior recently freed up funding from the Inflation Reduction Act to help mitigate drought impacts on the lake.
