The state Congress in neighboring Sonora will consider a reform that would shift elections for governor by three years.
If current Gov. Alfonso Durazo has his way, his successor will only serve a three year term instead of the usual six. It’s part of a plan to adjust the state’s election cycle so that Sonorans will be voting for governor and president on the same ballot.
Durazo says syncing state elections with the presidential race will help ensure a positive relationship between the state and federal leaders, who both serve six year terms. That, he says, would help the governor carry out major projects that require federal support.
The proposal has been sent to the state Congress for approval, where it passed in committee and now goes to a full vote.
