An international organization dedicated to protecting free speech says its members in Mexico have received a growing number of threats.
Article 19 has recorded at least 18 attacks on its members in Mexico this year.
Leopoldo Maldonado, director for the group in Mexico, said during a press conference Thursday that those attacks included death threats, being spied on at their office and homes, theft of computer files and phishing attempts, among others.
And while the organization has filed criminal complaints, Maldonado says authorities have failed to effectively investigate the crimes or prevent further harassment. And efforts by this administration to discredit Article 19 and journalists who publish stories critical of the government have only made matters worse, he said.
This year has been the deadliest year on record for journalists in Mexico. Article 19 has documented at least 12 reporters killed because of their work.
