Governors in Mexico normally serve a single, six-year term, like the president. However, something different could be on tap for Sonora.
Last week, Sonora’s Congress overwhelmingly approveda measure that would create a single, truncated three-year governorship beginning in 2027, a proposal supported by the state’s current Gov. Alfonso Durazo.
The change would sync the state’s gubernatorial election with the federal presidential election, which supporters say would encourage turnout when the state executive is up for a vote. Critics, like leaders of the state’s once dominant PRI party, calledthe measure a distraction from more pressing matters.
Now, a majority of municipal governments need to approve the reform for it to take effect.
