Violence in Sonoran town gains attention for the impact on local schools kids

A video went viral in Mexico this week of children cowering under their desks in a Sonoran school while a teacher sings to keep them calm.

In the video later posted to social media, a teacher in the Sonoran port town of Guaymas sings a popular Taylor Swift song while her preschool students are seen curled up under their desks.

The shooting outside the school Tuesday left two men dead and is one of several recent incidents that have highlighted the impacts of violence on everyday life —  including schools.

Earlier this week, a pregnant woman and her 3-year-old daughter were also injured in Guaymas during what officials have called a gun battle between criminal groups. On Wednesday night, the home and vehicle of a local police officer were set on fire.

The violence in Guaymas also follows a major armed conflict in northern Sonora that left 10 dead, including a 7-year-old child.

Some point to such incidents as evidence that Sonora’s security policies are falling short.
