Coconino County is asking FEMA for about $30 million in grants to stop further flooding from the burn scars after this year’s devastating wildfires in Flagstaff.
Flagstaff neighborhoods faced dozens of damaging floods this year after nine watersheds were destroyed in a pair of wildfires.
The county’s flood control board will ask FEMA for $26 million for long-term flood mitigation projects, another $3 million to fix culverts on Highway 89 and $2 million to repair a flood channel.
County officials warned that a total $120 million is needed to prevent further flooding. And they said, there is no guarantee FEMA will pay out the grants.
