Elvia Díaz: Sinema leaving Democratic Party was a 'gut punch' betrayal of voters

The Show regularly checks in with the Republic’s editorial board to talk about current issues facing the state and the region — featured in columns on the newspaper’s op-ed pages.

U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s announcement on Friday that she’s leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent continues to reverberate both here in Arizona and in D.C.

It’s raised questions about what the next two years look like in the Senate for President Joe Biden’s agenda, as well as what impact the move will have on the 2024 election, when Sinema would seek a second term.

Elvia Díaz, editorial page editor of the Arizona Republic, knew a bit before the rest of us about this switch, since Sinema wrote an op-ed in the paper.

The Show spoke with Díaz to learn her reaction to the senator's announcement.
