The city of Tempe committed to using clean energy more than a decade ago.
It is now working with a local utility through a new program that will help it reach its renewable energy goals.
The city has installed solar panels in a number of locations and generates about 10% of its power from the sun.
It recently entered an agreement with APS to purchase wind power.
That will bring the amount of renewable energy it uses to about 35% .
It is also working to reduce its carbon footprint through changes in energy efficiency, transportation, building codes and infrastructure.
"We’ve been working with APS for a while. They have clean energy goals, we have clean energy goals. So, they brought us this program, Green Power Partners, and so, we are partnering with APS to reduce city carbon emissions," said Grace Kelly, energy manager with the city of Tempe.
The city’s goal is to power all of its operations with renewables by 2035.
