Sonora’s governor says recent arrests will reduce outbursts of violence that have wracked several cities in recent weeks.
Some 50 people have been arrestedin connection to violent attacks in the Sonoran municipalities of Guaymas, Empalme and Cajeme, according to Gov. Alfonso Durazo. And he said leaders of the criminal groups behind recent violence are among those detained.
The arrests are leaving criminal groups without their leaders, or masterminds, which he said should reduce the harm they cause.
Durazo credited the increased presence of military and national guard troops in the state for the ability to find and detain cartel members, and said those armed forces will also help prevent further violence — an assertion that critics say has not played out in reality.
Several Sonoran cities have faced serious violence in recent weeks, including businesses being burned and gun battles that have left bystanders — including children — injured or killed.
