Griner will return in the upcoming WNBA season

In her first official statement since returning to the U.S., Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner confirmed  on Instagram that she intends to play in the upcoming WNBA season.

She also thanked President Joe Biden and all other advocates who supported her and helped to free her after 10 months in Russian custody.

Mercury President Vince Kozar says basketball is a part of Griner’s identity.

“Every letter that we exchanged she asked about her teammates, she asked about basketball, she talked about missing 'hoop,' as she calls it," Kozar said.

Griner then pledged to use her platform to help all other wrongfully detained Americans in foreign custody return home.
