Former University of Arizona men’s basketball coach Sean Miller avoided sanctions this week after being investigated for allegedly violating NCAA rules. The Independent Accountability Resolution Process, which oversees sports infractions cases, released a report detailing the decision.
The report concluded that Miller was in “no violation” in his responsibilities as head coach regarding the monitoring of two assistant coaches involved in cases of unethical behavior and conduct.
Former assistant coaches Emanuel Richardson and Mark Phelps received show-cause penalties for their rules violations. The report tied Richardson to charges of bribery and fraud. Phelps was implicated for providing a benefit to a student-athlete and instructing another student-athlete to make unauthorized recruiting contacts.
The panel that heard the case also instituted penalties toward an assistant swimming and diving coach who also violated NCAA rules by conducting “impermissible tryouts” and providing preferential treatment to prospective student-athletes and having another student-athlete make unauthorized recruiting contacts.
