Well-known journalist attacked in Mexico, the world’s deadliest country for journalists

One of Mexico’s most prominent journalists was attacked on Thursday. The country is considered the deadliestin the world for media workers.

Well-known radio and television anchor Ciro Gómez Leyva was attacked by two gunmen late Thursday night near his home in Mexico City.

The shaken reporter said he was the victim of an assassination attempt during his morning new show Friday, and thanked people for offering their support and well-wishes after the shooting. He also posted photos online of the aftermath of the attack, crediting the armored SUV he was driving for saving his life.

Officials say they are investigating the case, and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed his concern for the journalist.

López Obrador has made a habit of criticizing reporters during his daily press conference and often singled out Gómez Leyva.

Press freedom advocates say those verbal attacks have contributed to insecurity in a country considered the deadliest in the world for reporters — making up 20 percent of all journalists killed worldwide in 2022, according to a new report from watchdog group Reporters Without Borders. At least 11 journalists have been killed in the country this year, although some groups put the number even higher.
