After a contentious back-and-forth, Mexico’s Legislature has approved a more modest electoral reform pushed by the country’s president.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador — or AMLO as he is widely known — had hoped for approval of a much broader constitutional reform. But without the higher threshold of votes needed for such a change, he opted for a narrower measure that was passed by both houses of Mexico’s Legislature this week.
Among the changeswill be curbs on the power of electoral officials to punish politicians who run afoul of campaign rules.
A legislative leader from AMLO’s own party joined critics in raising concerns about the possible unconstitutionality of some provisions. On Friday, AMLO defended the reform, and said it’s now up to the Supreme Court to decide whether it's constitutional.
