Two Arizona conservative groups have filed a lawsuit to try to keep dark money shielded from the public. The suit comes in response to Proposition 211, which passed with overwhelming support in November.
Nearly three out of four Arizona voters approved Prop. 211. The measure aims to expose dark money by identifying people who gave $5,000 or more to organizations that spend over 50-thousand on state political campaigns.
Two groups — the Center for Arizona Policy and the Arizona Free Enterprise Club — are now challenging Prop. 211, saying it’s unconstitutional. They argue that the measure could discourage potential donors, violating their free-speech rights.
Arizona law has long required that the names of any individuals who give $50 or more to political campaigns be publicly disclosed.
But until the passage of Prop. 211, donations filtered through third-party organizations have been shielded.
