Peoria residents who want to use their homes as Airbnbs or other short-term rentals now have to apply for a permit to do so. That's because of an ordinance adopted by the Peoria City Council.
The ordinance requires rental property owners to get the free permit and comply with other neighbor notification and health and safety guidelines.
Bob Lozier is a compliance manager with the city. He said property owners will be required to notify neighbors about their short-term rentals. That’s partially because there have been complaints in the past.
“The most common complaint is loud parties, parking, trash being strewn throughout the neighborhood," he said. "In the past, we didn’t really have a mechanism to track those complaints, which we will now.”
The city has created an online portal to make the process easier.
“That has many useful links including how to apply for the permit," Lozier said. "Residents can also search a map of all the permitted locations [and] they can file a complaint.”
Fines will be imposed for people who don’t follow the new rules.
