More high-profile violence rattles Sonora’s port city of Guaymas

In recent months, Sonora’s coastal Guaymas has been the site of frequent high-profile criminal violence.

On Monday afternoon, opposing criminal groups had a car-to-car shootout in the major port city near the popular beach town of San Carlos, according to state security officials. Two were killed and another was wounded in the shooting, and the car chase caused a crash that resulted in additional injuries to bystanders.

That was just the latest spectacular display of violence in a city that has recently seen regular shootouts, several of which have forced schoolchildren to take cover in their classrooms.

Federal crime figures show that Guaymas has had more murder cases in 2022 than any other year since at least 2015. And there’s still one month of data left to report.
