Why wood-burning fires? AZ environmental officials wish you wouldn't

With the holidays just about here, and a slight nip in the air, many Arizonans start to think about lighting up their fireplaces or fire pits. But the state’s environmental regulators would rather you not, especially around Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

That’s because all of those fires add fine particulate matter, known as PM 2.5, to the air, leading to high pollution advisories.

Matt Pace is a meteorologist with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

The Show spoke with him to learn about what factors into the bad air days we experience this time of year.
