Former Border Patrol agent sentenced in long-ranging corruption cases

A former Border Patrol agent was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison on various corruption and weapons charges.

Ramon Monreal-Rodriguez, a former Tucson-area agent, was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison and ordered to pay $151,000 in restitution to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Monreal-Rodriguez was accused in two separate federal corruption cases. He pleaded guilty to bribery, conspiracy, and several weapons charges. Including providing firearms to a convicted felon.

In 2018, Monreal-Rodriguez was involved in a pair of schemes to buy firearms for other people. That same year, he smuggled drugs inside his agency vehicle past federal checkpoints and helped smuggle cash back to Mexico.
