For each of the past several years, Sonora has faced the sobering reality that it could run short on water. Now officials say they have a plan to address the issue.
To guarantee water supplies in the state, Governor Alfonso Durazo announced a new water plan with major infrastructure projects — including construction of new aqueducts and dams, repairs on existing dams and the expansion of a desalination plant in the port city of Guaymas.
In recent years, climate change and drought have led to such low levels of water in the state’s reservoirs that major cities like Hermosillo have been at risk of running out of water during the hot summer months. So far those crises have been held off by monsoon rains.
Experts say that addressing poor administration of the state’s water and excessive consumption are necessary to provide for the long-term future of Sonora.
