An area of south Phoenix known as the "Four Corners" could soon be home to a farmer’s market. It will mark the first project on land the city took control of more than 20 years ago.
In an effort to fight blight and spur redevelopment, Phoenix tore down businesses and took control of 12 acres on the southwest corner of 24 th Street and Broadway Road. But the property has sat vacant for decades.
On Wednesday, the City Council will vote on allowing MAA Wellness Center to run a temporary farmer’s market while future development plans are being considered. A council report says, “The license fee will be based on market rent and/or other valuable consideration, and any fees received will be reinvested by the Neighborhood Services Department into the community.”
Based on community input, Phoenix is looking for developers to bring healthy food options, health care services and other retail options, a process that’s expected to take more than a year. During the 2000s, the population within five miles of the area increased more than 15%.
The Four Corners of 24 th Street and Broadway is less than three miles from South Mountain Park and Preserve, South Mountain Community College and the under-construction South Central light rail line.
