A small community in neighboring Sonora’s picturesque Rio Sonora is starting the year without its own police force.
At the end of December, the police commander of Arizpe submitted his resignation, citing personal and professional reasons, according to a statementfrom the local government.
The small town of nearly 3,000 is almost three hours southwest of Douglas. The commander was joined by other police officers, though Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo later said that a pair of them had failed to take tests intended to ensure the trustworthiness of cops.
Durazo said that public safety is currently being covered by state police forces and that there were no reports that the resignations came in response to threats, as has occurred in other Sonoran cities like Guaymas.
