Arizona school districts are facing a now-familiar dilemma: whether or not they’ll be allowed to spend money the state has allocated to them.
Last year, districts warned of layoffs, school closures and more if lawmakers did not waive a cap on spending, known as the aggregate expenditure limit. The Legislature ultimately did vote to let districts spend their money, but this year, the state is back in the same position.
That’s due, at least in part, to the failure of former Gov. Doug Ducey to call a post-election special session to deal with the issue; several lawmakers say he’d promised to bring them back to waive the cap again for this year.
