Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Heston Silbert retires

The director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Heston Silbert, announced that he will retire Friday.

This comes after the director of Arizona’s Department of Corrections announced his retirement in December, which takes effect Wednesday.

Silbert was appointed by former Gov. Doug Ducey in 2019. In an unlisted YouTube video, he said Gov. Katie Hobbs’ staff told him that he wouldn’t be retained as director.

“I want to make clear to everybody that I would wait until that decision was made by the governor-elect and her staff,” Silbert said.

In the written announcement of his retirement, Silbert said he wishes Hobbs and her team all the best.

“I completely understand the decision,” Silbert said. “I understand the process.”

Hobbs has not yet announced who will fill Silbert’s position.
