Warlike scenes played out in the Mexican state of Sinaloa on Thursday after a successful operation to recapture an alleged organized crime leader.
On Friday, Mexico’s Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval shared the grisly price of Ovidio Guzman’s arrest: 29 people were killed, 10 of whom were members of the Mexican military and the remainder suspected criminals. Another 35 soldiers were wounded.
Sandoval said that there are no reports of any civilian loss of life.
Nearly two dozen people were arrested, and a number of weapons, vehicles and ammunition were seized.
Chaos erupted across Sinaloa and its capital Culiacan after Guzman, son of notorious imprisoned drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was captured. Vehicles were burned, airports were closed, and gun battles raged.
