Flagstaff schools, colleges announce closure on Tuesday due to snow

The Flagstaff Unified School District announced that its schools will be closed on Tuesday due to heavy snowfall in northern Arizona. NAU, Coconino Community College and the Williams Unified School District will also be closed on Tuesday. This includes before and after school activities, as well as food service.

Joshua Butler, director of communications with the Flagstaff district, said the district’s assessment team is still deciding whether to close the schools on Wednesday.

“They usually go out at about 2:30 to 3 a.m. the morning we have a snowstorm, for example," Butler said. "They will assess roads throughout the entire school district and they will make a determination if it’s going to be a two hour delay or a full-day cancellation.”

The Flagstaff Unified School District's assessment team consists of the superintendent and directors of transportation, facilities and operations. The district serves a little over 9000 students.

Butler says the district builds two “snow days,” into its schedule, which have already been used. He says students will not have to make up those days, but staff will. He says parents will be updated via social media, the district's website, press releases to radio stations and text messages.
